WB Guards Defend Their Regional Title
Congrats to the WB lifeguards who took first place in the South Atlantic Regional Lifeguard Tournament in Folly Beach, SC last week with 389 points. This is the fifth year in a row that Wrightsville Beach has taken first in their division. Jacksonville Beach, FL finished in second place in the big beach category with 308 points and Virginia Beach, VA took third with 264 points.
Wrightsville Beach had several individual champions: Matt Wistoff in the Run-Swim-Run, Kathy Yarbrough in the Ironwoman, Lindsey Gerkens in the Paddleboard and Surfski, and Mo Peacock in Beach Flags. The team also took top honors in several team events: Landline (Sawyer Dove, Hunter Hay, Mo Peacock, Lindsey Gerkens), the men’s 4×100 (Adam Gartrell, Mo Peacock, Hunter Hay, Tyler George), and the women’s Taplin Relay (Cat Gargula, Kathy Yarbrough, Lindsey Gerkens, Jenson Engen). Where Wrightsville Beach really showed its strength though was in its depth. Not content to settle for scoring one place in an event, the team often scored several times in each event making it truly a team effort.
Josh Drew, Adam Gartrell, and Matt Wistoff took 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the 2K beach run. Zach Sowers, Will Swiss, Sawyer Dove, and Matt Wistoff took 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th in the Surf Swim. The women’s Rescue Race teams (Cat Gargula, Thalia Harrison, Lindsey Gerkens, Kristi Falco and Kathy Yarbrough, Marisa Martinez, Jenson Engen, and Kristen Smith) took both second and third places and all four of the women’s paddle rescue teams made the finals and scored points for the team finishing 2nd, 3rd, 8th, and 9th. Charleston County was a great host and put on a fantastic competition. Congrats to all the athletes and a huge thank you to our donors and supporters without whom the competition team would not be able to compete! Another huge thank you to the lifeguards who stayed behind and worked extra hours to cover the beach while the competition team traveled to South Carolina. Looking forward to defending the title at 2017 South Atlantic Regionals in Jacksonville Beach, FL!
