Interested in joining the Ocean Rescue team?
Tryouts for Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue are held on two weekends in early spring each year, on the last Sunday in April and the first Saturday of May. Candidates only need to attend one of the tryout dates, but may retake the tryout on the second weekend if they would like to try and improve their time. The tryout consists of a swim/run: 1/2 mile ocean swim (wetsuits permitted) straight into a one mile beach run, two mock rescues, and a brief interview. Applicants are evaluated on their athletic abilities, mental determination, ocean and/or lifeguarding experience, positive attitude, and ability to work as part of a team. Successful applicants will be required to pass a drug test before beginning employment.
Pay starts at $10.25/hr with an extra .25/hr for NC EMT certification. Full-time lifeguards work approximately 46 hrs/week from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The summer begins with a required 2-week paid training period preceding Memorial Day weekend where new lifeguards learn all the skills required to be an ocean lifeguard and returning guards refresh their skills. During the training period, guards are required to do intensive physical fitness training on a daily basis. For the rest of the summer, lifeguards have mandatory paid training sessions 3x/week before work.
