Friends of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue (WBOR) is a nonprofit association that operates in conjunction with the Wrightsville Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation. Friends of WBOR is dedicated to promoting and supporting lifesaving and water safety in the Wrightsville Beach area. Funds raised by the organization make possible public outreach and ocean safety education programs that provide information to the public on drowning, resuscitation, water safety and rip currents at schools, open water races, health fairs, and other public events.
Funds also help the Wrightsville Beach lifeguards train for and attend regional and national lifesaving competitions. These competitions are a historic part of the surf lifesaving tradition in the United States and promote excellence in athleticism and lifesaving skills among professional lifeguards nationwide. In a testament to the excellence of the WBOR program, the Wrightsville Beach team won their division at the South Atlantic Regional Lifesaving Competition four out of the past five years, and took third place in their division in the National Lifesaving Championships in 2014 and 2015. Competition team members volunteer their time to train outside of work year-round in order to attain the fitness and expertise required to excel at the highly competitive tournaments. Their dedication results in faster, stronger, and more highly skilled lifeguards protecting the public on Wrightsville Beach. Without the generous support from the local community, the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue team would not be able to attend these competitions, which encourages excellence in the men and women that protect our families.
Wrightsville Beach Competition Team members volunteer their time to train as well as contributing money out of their own pockets to attend and compete at the tournaments. The remaining funds for the specialized equipment needed as well as travel expenses to the tournament locations are raised 100% through tax-deductible donations from local Cape Fear businesses and individuals.
