A group of athletes from the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue squad are selected each summer to represent Wrightsville Beach at lifesaving competitions. The team attends the South Atlantic Lifesaving Regional Championships every year, which is an exciting, but grueling two-day tournament that includes a variety of events which test lifesaving skills that lifeguards use every day on the job including surf swimming, rescues, paddleboarding, and beach running. Ocean rescue teams from as far south as Jacksonville Beach, FL and as far north as Virginia Beach, VA compete in the South Atlantic Regional Championships.
The competition team also competes at the United States Lifesaving Association’s National Championships. Competing at USLA Nationals gives the Wrightsville Beach lifeguards an opportunity to compare their lifesaving skills with guards from around the country, including professional year-round lifeguards from California and Florida.
